We welcome original research papers and research notes related to “Phonetics and phonology of Tibeto-Burman languages.”
For this special issue, we welcome submissions on the phonetics and phonology of Tibeto-Burman languages. Both synchronic and diachronic approaches are welcomed, e.g., descriptive, experimental, and theoretical studies as well as sound change and sound correspondence.

  • Abstract: This seminar is aimed for the general public to learn the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) which serves as a base for phonetics.
    The goals of this seminar are to learn the types of symbols used in IPA, how they are formed, and to understand the basic knowledge concerning IPA.
    Language learners keen on improving pronunciation, those who would like to observe the pronunciation of their native language objectively, and teachers teaching pronunciation are all welcome.

Call for Special Papers: “Phonetic and phonological approaches to the study of singing”

We welcome original research papers and research notes related to “Phonetic and phonological approaches to the study of singing”. This thematic issue aims to provide a state-of-the-art overview of interdisciplinary research where phonetics, phonology and musicology meet.

For this special issue, we welcome submissions on the interfaces between phonetics and/or phonology of speech and traditional singing in tonal and non-tonal languages. The approach can be descriptive, theoretical or experimental. Co-authored papers by linguists and musicologists are especially welcome.

Manuscripts should be written in English.

【Call for Workshop Proposal】

This workshop is to offer opportunities for presenters and audience to have discussions on a particular topic after the talks by several presenters. The submission process is similar to last year’s (not electronic). Please send the application form (approximately three pages in A4 size) to psj2016k@yahoo.co.jp in PDF and MSWord (or text file) format by June 26th.
Please insert “Submission for workshop at 31st General Meeting” in the email subject.The attached files should be named “psj2017workshop (name of organizer)”. We will send an email to notify the acceptance of submission within a few days. 【Guidelines for workshop submission】

  1. The organizer and presenters must be members of the Phonetics Society of Japan. Two or more presenters must be members of the Phonetic Society of Japan. Submission will be accepted if more than half of them are members. (They must be members at the time of submission or have finished with the application.) Please see http://www.psj.gr.jp/jpn/membership for details.
  2. The workshop may have panel members (members or non-members).
  3. The workshop will be two hours long. More than twenty minutes should be provided for Q&A including the audience.
  4. Workshops organized at or scheduled to be organized at other conferences will not be accepted. Submission will be cancelled if this is the case, and will be made public via the PSJ website.
  5. Presenters’ travel expenses and reward will not be provided.
  6. Notification of acceptance will be sent in early July. If accepted, please submit the full paper by July 31st (tentative). Late submission may not be published in the proceedings.
  7. The paper format is the same as oral/poster presentations. There should be one page that explains the aims of the workshop. Presentation papers should be less than four pages each.
  8. Languages used for presentations are limited to Japanese and English. Please write the title and abstract in the same language. Papers should be written in the same language as the abstract, and presentations should be given in that language.
  9. Distribution of additional materials on the day of presentation is prohibited.
  10. Abstracts will be made public as is via attachment to the conference program on the PSJ website before the conference dates (excluding references). The same abstract will be published in the Journal of Phonetic Society of Japan after the conference. Revisions will not be accepted after submission.

Call for Special Papers: “The phonetics and phonology of a voicing contrast”

We welcome original research papers and research notes related to “The phonetics and phonology of a voicing contrast.”

Recruiting papers related to “The phonetics and phonology of a voicing contrast”

For this special issue, we welcome submissions on the phonetics and/or phonology of a [voice] contrast. The approach can be descriptive, theoretical, experimental, or corpus-based. We are also open to submissions relating to language pathology, second language acquisition or singing voice.

 Submission for oral presentations (40 minutes, including Q&A. Submission should be original research that has not been published elsewhere) is now open. Please send the information below by email by Tuesday, April 18th, 2017 to psj2016k@yahoo.co.jp in both PDF and MSWord formats. Please insert“Submission for 335th Regular Meeting” in the email subject and “335th Regular Meeting (Presenter’s name)” as the file name. Please embed all fonts in the PDF file. Notification of acceptance will be sent by around April 24th after the reviewing process.

 Symposiums at Regular Meetings are to offer opportunities for presenters and audience to have discussions on a particular topic after the talks by several presenters. The report at the symposium does not have to be completed work; rather it is aimed for research projects in progress. Submission for symposium presentations is now open.   <Guidelines for preparing symposium proposal>
  • Time allocation:The symposium should be at least two hours but should not go over three hours. 20% of the time should be provided for Q&A including the audience.
  • Presenters:There should be more than two presenters, and more than half of them should be members of the Phonetic Society of Japan. The symposium may have a chairperson and panel members (members or non-members).
  • Topic:should be suitable as presentations at the Phonetic Society of Japan
  • Preparation:PR activities and operations on the symposium day will be supported by the Planning Committee. However, the organizer is fully responsible for any preparation before the symposium day. The Phonetic Society of Japan will not provide travelling expenses or rewards for presenters.
