Purpose of the special theme Over the past several decades, the techniques to observe articulation of speech have improved tremendously. The focus of this special issue is on articulation of spoken Japanese. The issue will include research studies about supralaryngeal articulation as well as laryngeal articulation of the Japanese language. Also, it will include comparisons of Japanese speakers of a second language (e.g., speakers of English, French, Chinese, etc.) with native speakers of those languages.
